What is a 'business' day?
Business days are considered Monday through Friday, excluding standard holidays observed by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). Investment requests made after 4:10pm AEST on a business day or on a non-business day, shall be considered received on the next business day.
Kwala charges a simple monthly subscription fee, based on the average daily value of your portfolio at the end of each month. This fee covers the cost of asset allocation, daily monitoring, and periodic rebalancing.
There are two other types of costs which apply to your investment: indirect costs and transaction costs. Refer to Kwala’s PDS for more detail on these costs.

If you’re abroad in certain countries for less than 90 days, you can maintain your existing account, but you can’t open a new account from outside Australia. If you have a Kwala account and permanently relocate overseas, you’ll need to close your account, which we can help you with by emailing us.
Can I choose any types of investments in my Kwala portfolio?
You can’t choose your investments but that's actually good news. Our Investment Team does all the hard work selecting which securities are most appropriate for responsible returns and use an active management framework.
How does the Kwala team select companies for my portfolio?
Our team analyses large amounts of information to generate our responsible investment portfolio consisting of Exchange Traded Funds and companies. We assess environmental and social contribution, tax rates paid on profits and corporate governance plus financial performance and an assessment of future prospects within the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
What aspects of Kwala are automated?
Kwala is a digitally responsible investment platform, meaning its main functions, including customer experience, fund transfers, account monitoring and rebalancing functions are accomplished through partnerships with our service providers. However, there is frequent human involvement in designing and providing oversight to our investment process and ETF selections. You can read about this in more detail here in our Product Disclosure Statement.
What is a unit trust?
Kwala is governed under what is known as an Australian multi-class unit trust, where each class of units will provide exposure to an investment option. There is currently only one investment option in the Kwala Fund. The Kwala Fund is composed of a combination of ETFs, listed companies and cash (including on the ASX, NYSE and NASDAQ). We expect to make further investment options available in the future.
How does rebalancing work?
Rebalancing is the periodic realigning of underlying assets in the Kwala Fund. Changes to market prices can change the Fund’s asset allocation. We review the Kwala Fund to monitor its ETF holdings, and will rebalance holdings when necessary during market trading hours.
How is my rate of return (gains and losses) calculated?
Rate of return shows how the total value of your investments has increased or decreased over time as a percentage. To calculate this, we use time-weighted returns, which is a commonly used way to evaluate investment performance. Time-weighted returns, is the compounded rate of return of your portfolio over a specific time period that does not reflect any impact from deposits or withdrawals.
Please note investments in securities (i.e. ETFs and stocks) involve risk, and the value of investments and income derived from such investments may fluctuate. Past performance is not a guide of future results. The performance report presents the relevant time weighted performance, which is a combination of daily returns compounded over a specified time period with the removal of the deposit and withdrawal impacts. Aggregate performance may not equal the sum of returns at an investment level. The sum of values in your account activity snapshot may not equal your current account balance due to rounding. Performance for advisory accounts is currently calculated net of fees, if any, and might include investments for which actual market prices are not available as of the date of this statement.
Over time, Kwala may adjust how it calculates performance for certain asset classes or strategies in the future. Performance of cash is generally included in the total performance calculation but not displayed separately. Inception to Date performance returns displayed above are cumulative returns.
How does Kwala calculate my balance and change information?
Your Kwala app is always updating information such as changes in the market value of companies held in your account from the previous business day’s closing price to the time indicated can be found on the “Company Details” screen. It represents the impact of market changes to that company on a given day, and is provided to you both as a dollar amount and a percentage. It doesn’t reflect the potential impact of any intraday trades, pending investments or withdrawals.
To understand and evaluate your account’s long-term investment performance, you should refer to the Portfolio screen and/or Statements section on your Profile screen. Your balance shows the most recently-priced market value of your portfolio, plus any investments that have been initiated but not yet received. While pending investments are reflected in your account balance, it generally takes three business days before funds are invested in your portfolio after an investment request has been submitted.
Your balance will reflect withdrawals on the business day after they’re completed.
We use delayed pricing data to update your ETF market values through the day. The delayed market data is generally delayed by 15-20 minutes when available. We rely on pricing received from our custodians when delayed market data is not available.
All investments involve risk, and past performance does not guarantee future results.

Why do you need to verify my account after each new investment?

Security and Authentication
What does ‘Verification Pending’ mean?
Kwala is subject to regulatory obligations from ASIC that require us to Know Your Customer (KYC) based on required personal information. We identify a customer using GreenID and determine whether we need additional information such as your driver’s license, Medicare card or Australian Passport.

There are also age, geography and residency requirements you must meet in order to open a Kwala account. Kwala is currently only available for individuals who are at least 18 years old, located in Australia, Australian citizens or residents for tax-filing purposes with a residential (not commercial or P.O. box) Australian address.
